Spring 2021 Virtual Dance Project

Our goal with this project was to unify our dancers no matter where they are in the world and to continue our mission of providing the Columbia dance community with opportunities to perform advanced repertoire. This project was completed remotely, taught by student repetiteurs, filmed by the dancers themselves, and edited by members of the CRB leadership team.

CRB collaborated with two choreographers this semester, both of whom brought unique and beautiful pieces to our program this fall. CRB also collaborated with Barnard Dance faculty member, Ashley Tuttle, to restage Les Sylphides for a virtual setting.

Les Sylphides, originally called Chopiniana after its composer, is a “romantic reverie” made up of a suite of dances in the romantic atmosphere of a moonlit park. The short ballet was choreographed by Michael Fokine and premiered in 1909 in Paris. This piece was readapted and rehearsed by Ashley Tuttle, an accomplished former principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre now part of the Barnard Dance faculty. These excerpts were performed by Natalie Ginsburg, Thaleia Dasberg, and Rose Kathryn Hollingsworth.
